Maroons shut down Sweet Briar, 6-0 in ODAC Women's Soccer Action

SWEET BRIAR, Va. --- Roanoke defeated Sweet Briar, 6-0 in ODAC women’s soccer action this afternoon. The Maroons improved to 8-5 overall, 4-3 in the ODAC. The Vixens dropped its record to 3-10-1, 1-7-1 in conference play.
 
The Maroons jumped out to a 5-0 first half lead and didn’t look back as they put up their highest goal total of the season. The women scored more goals this afternoon than its previous seven games combined. It was the most goals scored since an 11-1 win over Randolph last season. Roanoke is now 26-2-1 all-time against Sweet Briar.
 
Jessica Welfare (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley)scored off an assist from McKenzie Garst (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)just 10 minutes into action to take a 1-0 lead. Five minutes later, Gina Valles (South Windsor, CT, Westminster )scored her first goal of the season followed by Jamie Johnston (Wallingford, PA, Strath Haven )goal from Margaret Houston (Augusta, GA, Westminster School)to give the Maroons a 3-0 advantage midway through the first half.
 
Chayna Schiff (Broomall, PA, Marple Newton)scored in the 27th minute and Candace Connolly (Westtown, PA, Westtown)followed with her first goal of the season to give the Maroons a 5-0 halftime lead.
 
Stephanie Parenteau (Virginia Beach, VA, Kellam)scored her team-best seventh goal of the season in the second half from Lauren Schwarcz (Flemington, NJ, Hunterdon Central)for the final goal of the match and cruised to their eighth win of the season.
 
Lindsay Kooiman (Fredricksburg, VA, Mountain View)and Kelli Markham (Virginia Beach, VA, Kellam)earned the combined shutout for the Maroons in the win, with Markham collecting one save on the afternoon.
 
The women return on the road this Saturday as they take on Eastern Mennonite at 1 p.m.
