Fall Sports Teams prepare for the ODAC Tournament Starting this Weekend

SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke College fall sports will continue onto the post-season as they prepare for ODAC Tournament. Events will start this weekend, Oct. 31 as the cross country teams will host the ODAC Championships along with the men’s and women’s soccer teams as they play in the ODAC Quarterfinals later in the day. Field Hockey will be on the road against #3 seed Washington & Lee.
 
The men’s and women’s cross country teams host the ODAC Championships at Mowles Spring Park this Saturday at 11 a.m. The women are led by Maggie Moore (Roanoke, VA, Patrick Henry), who has been the top runner in the last five meets this season. Before injury, Stephanie Spickard (Daleville, VA, Lord Botetourt)placed first individually in the Ferrum dual meet, the first of the season. The men are led by Andrew Nichols (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring), who has been the top runner in three of six meets this season. Greg Hanlon (Pittsford, NY, Pittsford)placed first individually in the Ferrum dual meet and Josh Metz (Bear, DE, Charter School)placed seventh in the Guilford Invitational last weekend.
 
The Field Hockey team will travel to Lexington, Va. to take on third-seeded Washington & Lee at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon in the ODAC Quarterfinals. The Maroons, who are currently 2-13 on the season, dropped a 7-0 decision to the Generals earlier this month. 

Jessica Perkins (Abington, PA, Abington)
leads the team with five goals, along with Mariah Vietri (Jamestown, RI, Rocky Hill)and Helen Pearsall (Chicago, IL, Berkshire School)who have 10 points with four goals and two assists. Cristina Scichilone (South Yarmouth, MA, Nauset Regional)has 126 saves, third in the ODAC while Ashley Fuhrer (Moorestown, NJ, Moorestown )has totaled 13 defensive saves, second in the conference.
 
Women’s soccer defeated Randolph, 10-0 last evening to finish the regular season, 11-6 and earned a #4 seed in the ODAC Tournament. They earned a right to host against fifth-seeded Bridgewater, as they defeated the Eagles, 1-0 during the regular season.  Game time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at Kerr Stadium.  

The women are led by freshman Stephanie Parenteau (Virginia Beach, VA, Kellam), who has nine goals and one assist for 19 points.Jessica Welfare (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley)has seven goals and two assists for 16 points, followed by Rebekah Adams (Springfield, VA, West Springfield)with four goals and three assists for 11 points. McKenzie Garst (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)was named ODAC Player of the Week earlier this month after her performance against Bridgewater last month. She leads the team with five assists on the season.
 
Men’s soccer finished the regular season on a sour note after dropping their final two matches to Eastern Mennonite and Hampden-Sydney. The Maroons are currently 11-5-3 and fell to a #4 seed in the ODAC Tournament. They did earn a chance for payback as they host the Royals in the ODAC Quarterfinals and will look to avenge a 2-1 loss dealt to the Maroons last weekend.  Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. 

Chris Collins (Vinton, VA, William Byrd)
leads Roanoke with nine goals and three assists for 21 points followed by Kayvon Sarmadi (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley)with nine goals on the season. Taylor Johnston (Charleston, WV, Capital)has totaled four goals and a team-high five assists for 13 points. All-American center back Michael Stark (Newport News, VA, Menchville)has scored six goals on the season and has been a force in the backfield for the Maroons all season. Ryan Russell (Danville, VA, GW Danville)has been ranked in the top-10 nationally in both goals against average and save percentage all season long.
 
Volleyball will be the seventh seed in the ODAC Tournament the following weekend, Nov. 6 as they will take on the six-time defending ODAC Champions Washington & Lee at 4 p.m. The women are currently 13-15 on the season and finished 4-6 in the ODAC. 

Caitlyn Long (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)

Lynsey Ferris (Roanoke, VA, Northside)and Maggie Wagner (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)have led the Maroons all season long. Long has shifted back-and-forth all season from libero and setter, but has thrived under the circumstances. She is currently ranked fourth all-time in ODAC history in career digs with 1618 and is the only player in Roanoke volleyball history to have over 1,100 assists and 1,600 digs in a career. She is ranked fourth all-time in career assists as well. 
 
Wagner now has 326 digs on the season, which is ninth on the single-season list at Roanoke. Her 45 attacks tonight moved her up four spots to fourth on the single-season list with 893 on the season. In addition, she is also ranked 10th in career kills (566) and eighth in career attacks with 1687. Ferris passed her sister Ashley Ferris ’05 for ninth on the career block solos list with 86 and is leading the team in all three block categories this season. She is also ninth in career block assists and eighth in total blocks. Emily Martin (Daleville, VA, Lord Botetourt)has 368 digs, which is fourth on the single-season list at Roanoke and is fourth all-time in career digs with 930.
