Roanoke falls to Medaille, ties Rutgers-Camden in Cialella Soccer Classic
Kayvon Sarmadi
CAMDEN, N.J. --- Roanoke played in the Ninth Annual Cialella Soccer Classic hosted by Rutgers-Camden in New Jersey this weekend. They fell to Medaille (NY), 1-0 and tied tournament-host Rutgers-Camden, 1-1 on Saturday. The Maroons are now 3-1-2 on the season.
In Friday’s 1-0 loss to Medaille, the Maroons held a 10-6 advantage on shots, but the Mavericks’ first-half goal proved to be enough to give them their fourth win of the season.
In a battle of strong teams that both entered the game with 3-0-1 records, Medaille scored a first-half goal and outlasted Roanoke. The lone goal came at 14:58 when Rouse ran onto a through ball by senior back Josh Meier and beat one defender in the box before scoring his team-leading fifth goal of the year.

Roanoke had several chances for the tying goal, with four corner kicks all in the second half.  But the Medaille defense, led by sophomore goalie Ryan Goettel held the Maroons scoreless for the first time this season.

Goettel made four saves for the Mavericks (4-0-1), all coming in the opening half. Roanoke freshman keeper Ryan Russell (Danville, VA, GW Danville)didn’t register a save.
In the second game of the tournament against Rutgers-Camden, Roanoke scored a first-half goal by senior forward Kayvon Sarmadi (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley)at the 18:33 mark on a shot from a crowd near the right post.
Rutgers-Camden’s Komer tied the game on a header with 9:37 remaining in regulation to force overtime and eventually to a 1-1 tie. The goal came late in the second-half as Komer headed home a long chip into the box by junior midfielder Andrew Filewicz.
Both teams had 19 shots and Roanoke held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks in a tight contest. The Maroons nearly took a 2-0 lead, but a goal was disallowed on an offside call in the opening half. Rutgers-Camden also nearly had another goal on a shot by Filewicz that banged off the right post.
Russell made six saves for the Maroons as he along with junior back Michael Stark (Newport News, VA, Menchville)were named to the all-tournament team. Sophomore Tim VanLiewhad 10 saves for the Scarlet Raptors, who are now 2-3-1 overall.
The men will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 16 as they travel to Emory, VA to take on the Wasps of Emory & Henry in the Maroons ODAC-opener. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
