Roanoke Slips Past NC Wesleyan, 3-1 in Men's Soccer

SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke defeated NC Wesleyan, 3-1 in non-conference action at Kerr Stadium Tuesday evening. The Maroons improved to 7-3-2 on the season while the Battling Bishops dropped to 3-5. The men are now 3-4-1 all-time against NCWC, including claiming three of the last four meetings.
 
Roanoke, who played NC Wesleyan for the first time since 1999, out-shot the Bishops, 17-14, but were even at four shots on goal apiece. NC Wesleyan held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
 
After both teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half, the Roanoke offense came alive, scoring the first two goals to pull away. Zaan Janse (Wellington, New Zealand, Wellington)scored the eventual game-winner three minutes into the second half to take a 1-0 lead. It was his third goal of the season. Nearly 15 minutes later, Kayvon Sarmadi (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley)scored his seventh goal of the season to give the Maroons a 2-0 lead.
 
NC Wesleyan got on the board in the 79th minute as Ousmann Sarr scored off an assist from Edgar Zaldivar to make it 2-1.
 
Michael Stark (Newport News, VA, Menchville)header off a corner kick from Jason Ryan (Radford, VA, Radford)put the game away with six minutes remaining to give the Maroons their seventh win of the season. It was Stark’s fourth goal and Ryan’s team-leading fourth assist of the season.
 
Tyler Rinko (Maple, Glenn, PA, Upper Dublin)finished with three saves in goal for the Maroons. Phillipp Uttikal had one save for the Battling Bishops
 
The men return to action on Saturday, Oct. 3 as they travel to Ashland, Va. to take on ODAC-foe Randolph-Macon. The Maroons are 27-16-6 all-time against the Yellow Jackets, but have split the last four meetings. Game time is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
